Baked Beans

Baked beans is one of those recipes that shows that "making it from scratch" really can make a difference. It takes some time to prepare the beans, but the rest is EASY.

Makes 16 servings

3 cups dried beans (we used Great Northern)
8 cups water
1 1/4 cups chopped onion
1 cup barbecue sauce
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
garlic powder to taste
4 slices bacon cut into small pieces

Directions:Sort and wash beans; place in a large Dutch oven. Cover with water to 2 inches above beans and bring to boil. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 1 hour.

Drain beans and return to pan. Add 8 cups water and onion then bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 2 hours or until beans are tender.

Drain bean mixture, and return to pan. Add all other ingredients and stir well. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
